Sunil Bansal
Autism Family Coach and Parening Counselor
Dr. Sunil Bansal (Ph.D.) is a scientist, researcher, and author who has redefined the global approach to neurodiversity through his organization, Autism Blessings. Based in Washington, DC, and currently a scientist at Georgetown University, Dr. Bansal transitioned from a career in pharmaceutical R&D to becoming a leading “Autism Family Expert” after his own identical twin sons were diagnosed with severe autism.
By applying his scientific rigor to parenting, he achieved the unprecedented recovery of his twins in just 11 months—a journey that resulted in nine World Records.
A Disruptive Philosophy: Fixing the Root, Not the Symptoms
Dr. Bansal’s approach is a radical departure from traditional “symptom-based” therapies. His core philosophy rests on the belief that “Speech is stuck in the brain, not the mouth.”
Brain Regulation vs. Sensory Integration: He argues that sensory issues and “behaviors” are merely symptoms of brain dysregulation. He views traditional sensory integration protocols as a “trap” that keeps families stuck for years without results. By regulating the brain first, the senses integrate naturally.
Behavior is Communication: Dr. Bansal asserts that kids on the spectrum do not have “behavior issues,” but rather unmet needs and a lack of receptive/expressive language. Frustration arises from the inability to communicate pain or desires; labeling these as “autistic behaviors” prevents parents from addressing the underlying cause.
The Environment as the Catalyst: He posits that behaviors are often a reaction to the environment and the approach of the caretakers. In his view, changing parenting strategy is more effective than any clinical intervention.
Key Strategic Principles
“Think with their Mind”: Instead of observing what the child is doing, Dr. Bansal trains parents to understand what the child is thinking.
Strategic, Not Targeted: He avoids traditional “targets,” believing they lead to pressure, frustration, and negative energy. Instead, he uses a strategic approach where learning is “imported” (drawn in by the child’s interest) rather than “exported” (imposed by the adult).
Passive Learning: Following the science of the human brain, he advocates for a rich, engaging environment where children learn by noticing things naturally.
The Oro-Motor Myth: He challenges the “hyped” use of oro-motor exercises (like jaw massages) to generate speech. He maintains that while these may help clarity, forcing sounds is a “blunder” because true speech is spontaneous and originates in the brain.
Mission: Empowering the “Parent-Therapist”
Dr. Bansal is determined to change the “Autism Dictionary,” aiming to make terms like “non-verbal” extinct. His model focuses on Parental Training, with the conviction that:
“Only and only if parents learn parenting, no kid in the spectrum would ever need a therapist. Not even me!”
Results Over Traditions
While traditional methods may see 9 out of 10 children lagging in language after years of therapy, Dr. Bansal’s methods have led his own children to be three years advanced, currently performing at a Grade 1 level by age Four. He emphasizes Life Skills over Academics in the early stages, ensuring a child crosses the communication threshold at home before entering a school environment, which he otherwise considers a “wastage of time.”
Through Autism Blessings, Dr. Bansal is rewriting the research on Autism, proving that with the right approach over effort, autism can be transformed from a challenge into a blessing.
